Bis zur Eröffnung der Trogbrücke im Oktober 2003, mussten die Schiffe die vom Mittellandkanal über den Elbe-Havel-Kanal einen 12 km langen Umweg über die Schleuse Rothensee, Elbe und Schleuse Niegripp in Kauf nehmen. Wasserstraßenkreuz TrogbrückeDer Verbindungskanal zwischen Kanal und Elbe heißt Elbeabstiegskanal. Er hat direkte Anbindung an den Magdeburger Binnenhafen, und bildet mit eigenen Hafenanlagen (die ab 2004 erweitert werden) einen Teil des Hafens. Damit der Magdeburger Hafen auch bei Niedrigwasser auf der Elbe durch Schiffe vom Kanal befahrbar bleibt, ist zwischen Abstiegskanal und Elbe eine Hafenschleuse geplant. Die Kanalbrücke ist auf ganzer Länge als Stahlkonstruktion vorgesehen. Die Kanalbrücke besteht aus der Vorlandbrücke, die mit einer Länge von rund 700 m über das Elbvorland führt und der Strombrücke, die mit einer Länge von 200 m das Flußbett der Elbe überspannt. Die Wassertiefe im Trog beträgt 4,25 m, die Trogbreite zwischen den Stauwänden beträgt 34 m; die Kanalbrücke ist damit nur im "Einbahnverkehr" zu befahren. Die Durchfahrtsbreite auf der Elbe beträgt 90 m bei einer Stützweite von 106,2 m. Die lichte Durchfahrtshöhe unter der Brücke beträgt 6,50 m über dem Höchsten Schiffbaren Wasserstand (HSW), damit das Befahren der Elbe mit Containerschiffen mit drei Containern übereinander uneingeschränkt möglich bleibt Mit der Schleusenanlage Hohenwarthe wird am östlichen Ende der Mittellandkanal-Haltung Sülfeld-Hohenwarthe bei Normalwasser- ständen ein Höhenunterschied von über 18 m zum Elbe-Havel-Kanal überwunden. Bei einem prognostizierten Verkehrsaufkommen von rund 12 Mio. t in Hauptverkehrsrichtung, reicht die Leistungsfähigkeit einer Schleuse nicht aus, so dass der Bau einer Doppelschleuse erforderlich wird. Die Kammerabmessungen, Sparbecken und das Füllsystem entsprechen im wesentlichen denen der Schleuse Rothensee (Schleu- senlänge 190 m, Kammerbreite 12,50 m). An den Oberhäuptern sind Zugsegmenttore und an den Unterhäuptern Hubtore vorge- sehen. Beim Antrieb der Hubtore soll erstmalig auf einen mechanischen Antrieb mit Gegengewichtsausgleich verzichtet werden. Geplant ist der Einsatz von rund 10 m langen hydraulischen Antriebszylindern beidseitig des Tores Die Trogbrücke des Mittellandkanals über die Elbe--- Die vollständig aus Stahl konstruierte Trogbrücke stellt das Kernstück des Wasserstraßenkreuzes dar. Mit 918 m ist sie die längste Kanalbrücke Europas und führt den Mittellandkanal über die Elbe hinweg in Richtung Elbe-Havel-Kanal. Die Brücke besteht aus den 3 Feldern der 228 m langen Strombrücke und den 16 Feldern der 690 m langen Vorlandbrücke. Diese ist als Flutbrücke für den Hochwasserabfluss der Elbe konzipiert. Die architektonische Gestaltung macht die Trennung von Strom- und Vorlandbrücke sichtbar. Die Strombrücke ist durch eine zum Fachwerk aufgelöste Außenwand geprägt; die Vorlandbrücke stellt eine geschlossene Stauwand dar. Der Übergang zwischen Strom- und Vorlandbrücke sowie die Übergänge zwischen Kanal und Brücke an den Widerlagern werden jeweils durch Turmpaare in Prismenform gekennzeichnet. Die Vorlandbrücke fällt des Weiteren durch die Gestaltung der Pfeiler auf, die durch ihre ausladende geschwungene Form an Schiffsspanten erinnern. Eine Hochwasserentlastungsanlage ist in das westliche Widerlager der Kanalbrücke integriert, um den Abfluss des Kanalwassers in die Elbe zu ermöglichen. Dies ist notwendig, da die Osthaltung des Mittellandkanals als Hochwasserableiter überschüssige Wassermengen aus dem Drömling aufnimmt. Die Wassertiefe beträgt im Trog 4,25 m. Die Trogbreite zwischen den Stauwänden beläuft sich auf 34 m. Damit ist die Kanalbrücke nur im Richtungsverkehr befahrbar, weil die nahe gelegene Schleuse Hohenwarthe den Verkehrsablauf bestimmt.
