the gordon yer speakin aboot wid be gordon murray, his son was killed at basingstoke middle 1960s he drove for gibbon as well ,dougie hid a steel cab foden wi a 240 gardner there wisna mony o them built we used to bring beetroot up fae aside cambridge to baxters as well a fair hike wi a 150 gardner

Hi Mike, been trolling through your site again, was pleased to see the picture of the Cameron & Gibbon Guy lorry, they ran a lot of Guy's in the 60's in fact they might have been agents for them ? They seemed to change to Fodens in the early 70's I remember a friend of mine Dougie Spark getting a new Foden Haulmaster around about 1970. I think Dougie lived at Kinneff, there was another Cameron & Gibbon driver in the village (can't remember if his surname was Gordon ? ) I knew a lot of the Cameron & Gibbon drivers as they used to back load red beetroot out of Yorkshire for Baxters. They used to tell me a wash and brush up in the Derry was as good as a night out , Happy Days. regards Big Al

thanks for dropping by. I haven't done a lot on the site for a while, but now that the dark nights are here (all too soon!)
I will try to catch up on the back log of pictures.
It's good to hear from 'real' drivers from the good old days, as they were called,
whether they were actually good or not
is for you guys to comment on, because you were there!
I didn't arrive until '67.
The Golden Age of British Transport would have been over by then!

Hi Postie.

This loon nearly had more than a reed face a couple of times ye ken !! It wasnt a BSA I was worried about, more like a BS...............perhaps it will be safer next time ??

As for the weather it was grand the early part of the week and I was warned to bring the weety weather gear with me - the inside of my car looked like an oil workers kit bag.

Mike. If you need a hand I am well up on Caravans/Campers so if you get stuck give us a shout. Are we allowed to mention Caravans etc on a Truck site......??

Hmmm, caravans on a truck website? I'm not sure, although I do have one, and a recent mini-bus for conversion to motorhome.
I suppose it would depend on what interest there is, but that would open up a whole new realm of discussion, not sure,
what think ye, shipmates? (or should I say, lorryraks?)

Hi Mr & Mrs Postie. (An open letter to ye both)

Just a word in your lugs. Thanks to you both for the great welcome I was given in Turra during my stay last week. I never knew people could be so friendly, to an almost complete stranger and especially to a ' Sassenach ' I hope if you are ever down my way I can return the favour. The knowledge about trucks, people, places, photos and especially the history you passed on to me was just great. My head is still reeling !! There is still so much I want to see and do. Beautiful countryside.

Mr P, thanks for the gifts, the pic is now hanging in my flat and is a constant reminder of my visit. BTW, I'll keep it quiet from the rest of this 'crew' about the whisky you now have after the Glenfiddich distillery visit ?? You don't want too many visitors wanting to share now do you.....??? hehehe That place has to be one of the finest experiences I have had for many a year. I was like a kid in a sweet shop, I did try to behave myself - must have been the fumes.....?
Sniffing the interior of a barrell of 35 yr old malt is something I shan't forget in a hurry, mind you caressing/cuddling the 21 yr old (Whisky, in case you were wondering ??) I bought MIGHT just make up for it !! Did you know that the latest 50 yr old malt costs £10000 per bottle, twice the price of last years. Lottery win I think ? Oh, yes. The luck was in for me as well as I bought a lottery ticket on the Friday in Turra and won a few quid. About enough for the cork on that 50 yr old !! Possibly ?

Mrs P. What can I say ? You are an Angel, without your help and local knowledge I could have been wandering around aimlessly for days. Thanks for the guidance, interpreting the Doric to my English and back and the fine meals you made me. I'm stuffed !! Now, what the hell am I supposed to de with this Haggiss ?? No cooking instructions ?

I think you are both great company and I had a terrific time. So good in fact as someone once said, "I'll be back !" Sorry to spoil your day Mr & Mrs P. ???
Next time it will be for longer and Mr P, we WILL get you to the places I wanted you to see with me. Pass on my thanks too to Elizabeth, Dorothy and Dyliss and the rest of the 'cast' at the Heritage Centre, they were all great too.

One other thing for any males visiting the Postie household, Not sure why that loo seat wasnae fixed till I went back home though....it caused many a hairy moment in certain parts !!! hehehe. Mr P will know what I mean......? Oh, yes. I now know it's the wife, not (wifie) I was nearly 'castigated' by Mrs P when I showed up for using that term before ! Could have been very nasty ?? You have a grand wife there Mr P.

Many thanks to Jimmy and Night Trunker as well for the suggestions and directions you gave me. The Falconry was another good place to visit, even when the weather was wheetie ? I was fair drookit !!
