Scattered along the beach at Moeraki which is some 40 kilometers south of Oamaru, the boulders are a popular visitor attraction.
The soft mudstone containing the boulders was raised from the sea bed around 15 million years ago and sea erosion of the cliff is exposing the erosion-resistant boulders.
Emerging from the cliff, as if being born from the earth, the World famous Moeraki Boulders are septerian concretions formed some 65 million years ago. Crystallization of calcium and carbonates around charged particles in muddy undersea sediments gradually formed the boulders in a process taking as long as four million years.
The soft mudstone containing the boulders was raised from the sea bed around 15 million years ago and sea erosion is exposing the erosion-resistant boulders.
According to Maori tradition, the boulders are gourds and calabashes, which is traditional maori food, washed from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand some 1000 years ago.
Almost Unique in the world, the Moeraki Boulders are situated about 25 mins south from Oamaru along Sh1.Tthey can be seen emerging from the cliffs and slowly disappearing into the sand and the sea.Visitors can walk along the beach to visit the boulders, best seen at low tides, but visible most of the time.

Fleurs Place a restaurant, cafe and bar right on the waterfront at the old jetty. Our specialty is fresh fish straight from Moeraki Bay fishing boats.
The restaurant established on an early whaling station site in 2002 and is built from gathered collectables and demolition materials from all over New Zealand.
The owner Fleur Sullivan has made her reputation in Central Otago where she established Olivers restaurant and has received numerous awards for her restaurants and in recognition for her contribution to tourism.

Established in 1863, Dunedin Botanic Garden is the oldest in New Zealand. From the formal lower gardens to the hillside native forest, the 28 hectares contain over 6,800 plant species. From its earliest days, the Dunedin Botanic Garden has featured a large number of rhododendron species.

The beautiful Edwardian Winter Garden Glasshouse - containing tropicals, sub-tropicals, cacti and succulents - is a feature of the lower garden. For a hands-on experience, the Herb Garden provides a delightful array of scents and textures as well as information on traditional uses for herbs. The formal rose and camellia gardens complete the lower garden, which is beautifully bordered by one of the largest rock gardens in the world as it rambles along the edges of the Lindsay Creek.

After seeing a bit of Duneding's city like the "Octagon" and St. Paul's Cathedral we did the tour of "Cadbuy" which we all agreed that it was disappointing and wouldn't do it again. It wasn't cheap to get in. We weren't allowed to take photos apart from when the tour finished - see Della's and Jennie's photos. But the Speights tour was great and worth every cent. I spent a fortune in their shop and even went back a few days later to buy more stuff. Shame that the "Porter" is not for sale in our shops, it's a fabulous beer. Read all about "Speights" here:
