My daughter on the steps of the Capital at Focus Day this year. Almost 400 of us rallied on the steps; the goal to get Legislators to focus on education and our kids. We got their attention; we had several Legislators at the rally. And more importantly we ended the Legislative session with an important piece of education reform being passed.

This was an awesome project at Granite Elementary this past year. All of the students, teachers, staff, faculty, and PTA executive board designed a 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch square block of fabric. All 660 squares were then organized by class and sewn together, starting with the kindergarten up to 6th grade at the top. Our PTA theme this year was "Granite Grizzlies are Great” which was embroidered at the bottom with the year. The quilt was a huge success! This is a beautiful quilt that is interesting to look and and will be admired throughout the years. It will be hung in one of the hallways.

My son Grant was given an assignment for his 1st Grade Teacher at Grace Miller Elementary School in La Verne and was asked top take his Flat Stanley on vacation for a week and document the places they had gone. Flat Stanley went to the Staples Center in Los Angeles, went to Church in Claremont, CA, went to school each day, went to work with Dad at the City of Upland and went as far as Arizona on the Colorado River and drove our boat. A volunteer and PTA member from a local Pumpkin Patch takes the kids in his son's 1st grade class on a field trip without ever leaving the classroom. "Pete the Pumpkin," as he is known at the Norcross Presbyterian Church Pumpkin Patch, sings, tells jokes, reads stories, juggles and prat falls his way through the life cycle of the Pumpkin. The kids come away with a coloring book, a souvenier pumpkin, and an understanding of how plants grow.

Our daughter, Emily was honored at the Wm Brooks School Awards Ceremony with a Gold Bear Award upon achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher for the trimester. She was also awarded the coveted President’s Educational Award for her accomplishment of achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher for 6 consecutive trimesters. She was awarded by her fellow classmates the Sportsmanship Award. Truly our family is blessed and our goals as parents merited with our desires for our children and all children to acquire knowledge, develop life skills, and live healthy lifestyles forming attitudes that enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of our community. Together we can make a difference in our nation’s greatest asset and “Youth Achieving Excellence”. I proudly carry the message “everychild.onevoice”.

Julia Martin (student) and Marcy Martin (parent/PTSA member) hang a banner for Teacher Appreciation Week at First Flight High School, Kill Devil Hills, NC. Julia, Student Government President, with the assistance of the Art Department and Administration, created the Appreciation Banner which listed the name of every faculty member. The banner was in place in the school rotunda for all to see on Monday morning of Teacher Appreciation Week.

This photo of my daughter Elise was taken by Mr. Mark Bregar, Principal at Parkside Intermediate School on "Road Trip North America" Day. The Road Trip North America is a program for the entire 5th grade giving the students a flavor for the different regions in the USA. Activities include guest speakers about famous Americans, dance, crafts and food. Students are encouraged to create attire from the different regions of our country. My daughter choose to be an Ohio tourist. Her t-shirt reads "I visited Westlake, OH and all I got was this lousy t-shirt". She holds a guitar in this photo recognizing our close proximity to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Nicole, a 5th grader sits during the graduation ceremony from AHAP, (Academically High Aptitude Program) of which she has participated since 3rd grade. Students meeting specific criteria, including having a high I.Q., participate in the AHAP program with students from all seven elementary schools in the district. These students that think "outside the box" are offered courses such as Law and Order, CSI & Mythical Tales to name a few. Students produce a newspaper twice during the year that includes their opinions, reviews, editorials, poems and puzzles. For the graduates the day was bittersweet since the program is not offered after the 5th graders graduate elementary school and move up to middle school.
