The highlight around school was a fire safety program for the children at Stephens Elementary given on Field Day 5/18/07 which ended with a shower from the firetruck hose. The children enjoyed an active, educational and fun-filled time!

Gunstream Elementary first grade students enjoyed having class at the new Frisco Safety Town.
Students, parents and teachers learned street safety through active class participation and physically practicing their new knowledge in the miniature town. Students followed street lights and sign rules while driving mini cars and strolling through little Frisco.

Garland Area Early Childhood PTA organized a field trip to the Garland Police Department where a police officer gave a short presentation and a tour of the department. The officer talked to the children about strangers, dialing 911, not touching guns and lots of other safety tips. As the children were led outside the building, they were surprised by a loud siren from a police car that slowly approached them and stopped in front of them. Many of them were in awe at the sound of the siren and they all thought it was cool to get in a police car. Andres Ceballos didn't want to get out of the police car! T

The McMurray Elementary School PTA in cooperation with the Peter's Township Police Dept. offered the Child Identification Program. In this free program, students in fifth and sixth grade were video taped and finger printed with the help of PTA volunteers. A DNA kit is also provided to be completed with a parent or guardian. The purpose of this program is to address the alarming fact that over one million children are reported missing each year. PTA volunteer Joanne Jaworski finger prints Alex Wisniewski.

Our School Nurse (and PTA Secretary) teaches our students proper handwashing techniques with an interactive program called "GloGerm". The nurse demonstrates how to wash your hands (complete with singing!). The kids then rub a non-toxic substance called GloGerm on their hands and wash it off, using the techniques that the nurse just showed them. Using a black light, she then shows them the places where they missed. The simulated 'germs' will glow under the black light. The kids have a blast with this program and it is clearly evident by the extra time they take washing their hands after the demonstration. Each child was also given a small bottle of hand sanitizer to keep in their desks.

Pictured are Slack Safety Patrol Officers with Officer Sanches, Texas State Troopers (Lufkin) and Cathie Greer, Associate Principal, Slack Elementary.

Safety Patrol consists of 5th graders who have been recommended by thier teachers to be members.

Thier duties/responsibilities include; helping students safely exit thier vehicles at drop off in the morning in the school drop off circle, assisting a Slack staff member in helping parents and children safely cross at the school crosswalk, raising and lowering of the flag at school each school day and giving presentations to students in Kindergarten through 4th grade on topics relating to bike and vehicle safety.

The Nutrition and Safety section of the Casis PTA sponsored "walk/bike/skate to school days" this year as a way to encourage fitness. Students of all ages and teachers joined in the healthy start to the day. More days are planned for next year along with organic school gardens.

Assistant District Attorney Rene Fitchner from the Nassau County DA’s office took time out to help the PTSA with Safe Child cards for all parents that attend the workshop with their child.
These cards are for parents to keep with their child updated picture and information
