thanks for yer kind wirds on the htl project.eence i started,
the memories came floodin' back.i rether enjoyed deein' it.

hiv jist fun oot that the firm lornfreight o' the broch, hiv been
pit aff the road.a victim o' the 'motorway mannies'.what a
peety.wid i be richt in sayin'that the eddie femily hid some
thing tae dee wi' the business.maybe the next generation
up fae arthur or sammy.

I think you're right there, there would be some tie-up!
It wasn't an overnight close down though, this has been coming for a while, there were quite a few offences.

You just don't mess with VOSA (Vehicle & Operator Services Agency) 'The Comissioners'. They are a very powerful Government body, and I would imagine have quite a lot of authority to 'wield their axe', so to speak. But it's the same old story, if you are trying to beat them, they will be watching you, and if you are trying your best to run legal, I would think they would be a bit more lenient with you!
I only ever got pulled in once on a routine roadside check, and they couldn't have been nicer to me, they were polite and efficient, and didn't hold me up for long.
It's dodgy and risky knowing that you are running overloaded, etc, you might get away with it for a while but you will eventaully get caught! Is it worth it?

I know of one haulier in particular (who shall remain anonymous) who is a regular visitor to Peterhead and constantly runs well overloaded. Ok, they have big machines that can pull the weight, but that's not the point, they are breaking the law, and the extra weight is putting stress on brakes and wheel bearings, etc!
If you are having to run overloaded all the time, then there is a possibility that your firm is struggling, which is not always the hauliers fault, increasing fuel costs, etc put pressure on the haulier, and the temptation to run overloaded to make ends meet is a possibility, but it's a risky one!

A lot of hauliers have decided it's not worth the risk, and have pulled the plug before the comissioners have caught them! It's not easy being in Road Transport these days, with competition and operating costs, etc, but without Road Transport, this country would be on it's knees in less than 2 days!
Lorry drivers even today still don't get the thanks they deserve for keeping this country running, without them, we would not have the standard of living we have in this country!

Well Done, Drivers!

Mr Munkle - (28/08/08)

Hello Mr Munkle

That's a fair bit of history you've got there on your website. I see lots of photos from prints / scanned 35mm film - they have soooo much more character then current digital photos just as the lorries on them. It's a great webpage and a great job you're doing. Keep it coming...

Best Regards

Mariusz Koscinski, Poland

Thanks, but it can be a lot of work at times!
The site wouldn't be worth looking at without the help of all of my contributors,
a Big Thank You to everyone who has sent in pictures over the last 2 years!
Mr Munkle - (11/08/08)

Jim Bruce

If its Jimmer Bruce you are wondering about then I'm fairly sure he retired late 2006, early 2007. I'm not 100% certain but my info came from a guy who did some relief driving for him. It would certainly account for Mike no longer seeing his motor in and around Peterhead.

Thanks,
Mr Munkle - (15/07/08)
