The Haitian Revolution (1791–1804) is the most successful slave rebellions in the Western Hemisphere. It established Haiti as a free country ruled by blacks and mulattoes. At the time of the revolution, Haiti was known as Saint-Domingue the most prosperous colony of France. That is why it was called " La perle des antilles". Through the revolution, people of African ancestry (mostly) freed themselves from French colonization and from slavery. Although several rebellions took place during that era, only the revolt at Saint-Domingue, beginning in Aug.1791, succeeded in permanently liberating an entire island. Twenty years earlier Vincent Ogé and Jn Baptiste Chavannes tried to fight for certain rights for the slaves; they failed and paid a hefty price.

The Battle of Vertières, took place on November 18, 1803. It was fought between the Haitian army led by Jean - Jacques Dessalines and the French colonial army under the command of Rochambeau. The new nation of Haiti had an army in the real sense of the word.

It was until the American Occupation (1915-1934) that the Marines under the order of the US Government created a different type of Haitian Army. That "Haitian army" was probably one of the surest and staunchest allies of the United States in Haiti . At the beginning it did some police work. The Haitian army was always able to deliver a coup d’état with the tacit and sometimes overt or covert approval of the US. Presidents Lescot & Estime were overthrown by the army.

Almost everyone would agree that the army has had a difficult history in Haiti and sometimes a negative impact on the country’s political process.

François Duvalier himself was afraid of that army. He knew that he could easily be forced into exile by that same army who ten years earlier forced Estime out. This is unquestionably why he created the VSN and the Tontons Macoutes a paramilitary force that would be able to face that army in an eventual coup d' etat attempt. He also had executed many officers in the army in the early 1960’s. He believed that they were potential coup d’état organizers. Several of these officers were of courses innocent. He acted irrationally and hastily. One also has to remember the position of Juan Bosh (the Dominican president vis a vis him.) They were bitter enemies.

Then later Prosper Avril, Henry Namphy left their marks on the army. No need to elaborate on that.

In 1991, Aristide was forced out. The army under General Raoul Cédras overthrew him in coup d' etat. Few years later,under pressure from the US (President Clinton), General Raoul Cedras and his acolytes had to leave Haiti in order for the duly elected president Aristide to return. It was then that Aristide gave the "coup de grace" to the army by dismantling it. (Again not the devil advocate that is understandable)

The role of an army is to protect the territorial integrity of a country, its people as well as its economy.

Cours Privés Roger Anglade was one among the best private schools in Port - au - Prince, in the 60's and early 70's . Of courses Petit Séminaire & St Louis de Gonzague were in a class by themselves. On the second row, one could include schools such as College St Pierre , Centre d' études secondaires, Geoges Marc, College Classique, College Bird etc etc.. Anglade had many great professors such as Roger Gaillard (litterature française), Menant Pierre - Louis (latin), Fritz Pierre Louis (physics), Remy Zamor (histoire d' Haiti), Mr.Joachim Etienne (english) , Laurent (histoire d' Haiti), and Roger Anglade himself.etc. etc just to name a few. Roger Anglade was an excellent professor and was a graduate of the prestigious School Sorbonne. He held a Masters in Physics althought he taught chemistry . I still can remember him smoking (he was a chain smoker) on the blackboard balancing his reactions. He was a down to earth man and loved what he was doing: teaching. He had a great dream : to have a school that would compete with Seminaire & St. Louis de Gonzague. He also had a great sense of humor. I am sure that anyone who attended this wonderful school is very proud .

Grotte Marie-Jeanne
Key Features

Grotte Marie-Jeanne is an unusual cave system with respect to its morphology, layout and in terms of its natural resources (geologic, biologic, historic/cultural, archaeological). The caves contain a number of significant natural resources including speleothems of all types and size, and speleogens that are unique to tropical caves. The series of large passages and chambers are visually enhanced by the large, intact and undamaged speleothems that cover the walls, ceilings and floors.

Positioned at an elevation of 120 metres, it has a vertical extent of 41 metres and is developed on at least 3 different levels with 56 recorded chambers. A large surface collapse is the main entrance to the system. The entrance doline has a tremendous amount of scenic value because of the existing forest that it contains and the cave entrances that open from it’s periphery. The many entrances and skylights allow for the development of a unique cave ecosystem that has not yet been fully identified or studied.

The cave is a repository of features that will provide data about the development of the cave and its relationship to the surface topography. These features also impart information on paleo-climate, sea level changes, and paleo and current hydrogeology; topics that are important on a local level and island-wide level.


History

Evidence of pre-historic and historic human usage of the cave and surrounding landscape makes it an important part of the cultural and ethnic history of the area and of the island.

Grotte Marie-Jeanne and associated caves bear evidence of historical use and also of pre-historic use. Signatures on walls and speleothems are common in the Galerie Superieur and in Grotte Belgique. The dates range from early in the twentieth century to more recent times. Other evidence of historical activity is signage which was used in Marie-Jeanne North to mark routes and chambers. Evidence of pre-human usage is also common throughout the cave system. Archeological material has also been documented in the form of pottery shreds and conch shells, characteristic of Taino (Indian) use in the region.

Biology

Among the biotas observed in Grotte Marie-Jeanne are bats, birds, crickets, pseudo-scorpions, flies, beetles and cockroaches. Small patches of actinomycetes were observed in several alcoves. A more detailed biologic inventory will undoubtedly document more cave life as the habitat does exist for a terrestrial cave ecosystem. Should flowing water be discovered in the lower levels of the cave the potential exists for aquatic life also.

Bones, skulls, and fully articulated skeletons have been documented in the cave system though they all appear to be of recent age. The sources of these remains were animals that wandered into the cave, fell in or got lost and then perished there.


Grotte Marie-Jeanne, in Port-à-Piment, Haiti, is recognized as the largest cave system in the country and has been the subject of great geological curiosity by numerous speleologists. It extends over 101 meters and is composed of various passages and chambers that, measured together, would reach close to two kilometers. These dimensions pertain only to the area that has been explored. Numerous unexplored passages and entrances may link it to other caves throughout the Port-à Piment plateau.

Protected for centuries by its geographic isolation, it could now become the greatest natural tourist attraction in southern Haiti because of the construction of a new road. Speleologists from the Hoffman Environmental Research Institute and Western Kentucky University have studied the cave system and provided recommendations for the possible use of the site as a tourist attraction. For security reasons, a large part of the cave would not be accessible to ordinary tourists, but the main gallery, which measures close to 14,300 square meters, may easily lend itself for supervised tours. Nevertheless, it must have the necessary structures in place for the safety of the visitors and to protect the cave from the irreparable harm that may be caused by human intervention to the cave system’s physical structure, its fauna and flora.

Grotte Marie-Jeanne’s geological and biological resources may justify declaring it as national park and placing it under the protection of an agency working jointly with the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Bureau of Ethnology in order to safeguard its fragile environment. But this is still under discussion. In his article, “Who Will Manage the Grotte Marie-Jeanne?,” Patrice-Manuel Lerebours expresses hope that the municipal authorities of Port-à-Piment and the government agencies dealing with development of tourism and environmental protection will promptly take the necessary steps for the promotion and conservation of Grotte Marie-Jeanne.

Haïti: Qui va gérer la grotte Marie-Jeanne ?


Reconnue jusqu'à présent comme étant la plus grande gotte d'Haïti, la grotte Marie-Jeanne, située dans la commune de Port-à-Piment, est, sans conteste, la plus grande attraction touristique naturelle du département du Sud et mérite une attention particulière du ministère du Tourisme et du bureau d'Ethnologie qui y organise d'ailleurs des visites annuelles avec les étudiants de la faculté d'Ethnologie. Des spéléologues de la Hoffman Environmental Research Institute et de la Western kentucky University s'y sont rendus et ont fait des recommendations en ce qui a trait à l'exploitation du site à des fins touristiques.



La grotte Marie-jeanne dont l'exploration scientifique s'est faite en deux temps, été 2007 et décembre 2008, est une véritable curiosité géologique qui attire l'attention de nombreux spéléologues. S'étendant sur cent un mètres la grotte est composée d'une série de passages et des chambres qui, mis bout à bout, atteignent une longueur d'environ deux kilomètres. Ces dimensions ne concernent que la partie explorée. Selon les chercheurs qui se sont rendus sur place, il se pourrait qu'il existe, en plus des passges découverts mais inexplorés, d'autres couloirs et chambres reliant, potentiellement, la grotte Marie-Jeanne à d'autres grottes du plateau de Port-à Piment car, non seulement il en existe plusieurs, mais de nombreuses entrées, qui n'ont pas été explorées, ont été répertoriées.

Si, pour des raisons de sécurité, une grande partie de la grotte ne peut être accessible aux touristes ordinaires, la galerie supérieure, s'étalant sur une superficie de 14300 mètres carrés, peut être facilement aménagé pour un parcours touristique dans des conditions de sécurité idéales. Néanmoins, la mise en place des structure nécessaires pour lui donner cette vocation touristique ne saurait se faire au petit bonheur, l'intervention humaine pouvant causer des dommages irréparables à la structure physique du site, à sa faune, à sa flore. Ainsi, de nombreuses recommendations ont été faites par l'équipe de chercheurs impliqués dans l'exploration de la grotte Marie-Jeanne et des grottes voisines.

Les ressources géologiques et biologiques de la grotte Marie-Jeanne et des autres grottes pourraient justifier que la zone où elles se trouvent soit décreté parc national et mise sous la protection d'une entité travaillant conjointement avec les ministères du Tourisme, de l'Environnement, le bureau d'Ethnologie, car le site est fragile et facilement dégradable. L'isolement géographique de la commune de Port-à-Piment a longtemps protégé son environnement et ses sites naturels. La construction du tronçon de route la reliant à Port-Salut, donc au reste du pays, risque de changer la situation. L'afflux de visiteurs peut être préjudiciable aux grottes et à leur environnement si les dispositions nécessaires ne sont pas prises à temps.

1.L'entité responsable de la gestion de la grotte Marie-Jeanne doit former des guides qualifiés car, selon le rapport de l'équipe d'exploration, aucun groupe de visiteurs ne devrait avoir accès à la grotte sans la présence de l'un de ces guides.

2.Les feux d'artifices et autres matériels explosifs, les appareils ou activités générateurs de bruits doivent être interdits car ils pourraient avoir un impact négatif sur la vie dans les caves (faune, flore) et sur l'environnement physique.

3.Afin de réduire l'impact de la présence humaine sur l'enviropnnement des caves, il serait préférable de limiter à 12 le nombre de visiteurs par groupe pour le tour écologique et à 6 plus un guide pour le « wild tour ». le guide doit connaitre les principaux passages à l'intérieur de la grotte ainsi que les zones à risque. Il doit aussi pouvoir assurer, en priorité, la sécurité des visiteurs et la protection de l'environnement intérieur et extérieur de la grotte.

4.Toutes les plantes et tous les animaux à l'intérieur de la grotte et dans son environnement immédiat doivent être protégés et observés à distance et ne doivent jamais être déplacés. Il faut interdire toute intervention humaine dans la vie de la faune et de la flore de la grotte. Il faut aussi interdire de toucher, marquer, casser ou enlever toute formation naturelle de la grotte. La coupe des arbres et des buissons envoronnants est aussi prohibée.

5.Le camping est interdit à l'entrée et à l'intérieur des caves.
6.Les déchets apportés de l'extérieur doivent être enlevés

7.La grotte doit être protégée des actes de vandalisme tels que le marquage au charbon, à la peinture en aérosol ou autres. Ces mêmes mesures doivent être prise pour la protection de l'environnement immédiat.

8.Toute modification dans les espaces sus-mentionnés doit être approuvée par l'autorité responsable de la gestion de la grotte, les altérastions à la morphologie naturelle de la grotte et du paysage environnant, comme la création de nouvelles entrées et/ou de nouveaux passages, pouvant affecter gravement le microclimat de la cave en modifiant sa température, son taux d'humidité ainsi que le ruissellement ou le débit de l'eau. Ce qui peut avoir des effets négatifs sur la faune et flore de la grotte.

9.Il est interdit de collecter (prélever) des spécimens animaux ou végétaux, des artefacts de quelque nature que ce soit (naturel ou culturel).

Il demeure évident que la grotte Marie-Jeanne ne manquera pas d'attirer des scientifiques de tous les horizons, spéléologues, biologistes et autres. L'entité responsable de la gestion du site devra encourager, dans la mesure où toutes les normes sont respectées, les recherches scientifiques qui ne peuvent qu'apporter un éclairage supplémentaire à cette richesse longtemps ignorée de la plupart des haïtiens.

Il est à espérer que les autorités municipales de Port-à-Piment, ainsi que les instances gouvernementales impliquées dans le développement touristique et la protection environnementale se montreront à la hauteur de leur tâche et prendront, le plus rapidement possible, les dispositions nécessaires pour la promotion et la conservation de la Grotte Marie-Jeanne.
